How to Access Your Computer Science Account
From Outside the CS Labs

NOTES:
  1. Log into a machine in the cetus or hydra labs (cetus0-cetus30 or hydra0-hydra30). We recommend that you no longer log in to either duncan or kenner. The cetus and hydra machines are significantly faster than duncan and kenner and are used by fewer people. Please be aware that the user physically seated at the machine has priority over remote logins. You will be asked to move to another machine if your work degrades the performance of the machine.

  2. If you have problems or questions, contact DII (974.9800) or your ISP (internet service provider.)

  3. Listed below are two options you have available to securely connect to your computer science account. The first option (SSH Secure Shell Client) provides a friendly graphical user interface (GUI) that controls your session. The second option (PuTTY) provides a simple terminal shell, no GUI to control the session. Neither Secure Shell Client is "better," the options are just different. Choose the Client best suited for you. Check them both out, you have nothing to lose.

STEPWISE INSTRUCTIONS for PuTTY:
You will be downloading a program called PuTTY. "PuTTY is a free implementation of Telnet and SSH for Win32 platforms, along with an xterm terminal emulator." In other words... PuTTY protects your password from being broadcasted to the entire world. Use it!
  1. (This step is only for those off-campus.) Dial into your ERA account or dial up your internet provider as usual.

  2. Using an internet browser goto the PuTTY information and download site.

  3. Read the FAQ and learn about PuTTY.

  4. click: Download PuTTY and read the page.

  5. If you are running Windows 95, 98, ME, NT 2000, XP, you will need to
click: putty.exe under the appropriate heading.

  6. Run PuTTY. A Configuration window should appear. The following settings should be made.
    Category: Sessions

  7. At the login prompt, type your CS 102 username and password as usual. This will give you a UNIX> prompt like you're used to seeing in the labs.

From this point, you may use this window to do any part of your CS 102 labs that DOES NOT open up another window. (This does not mean you can have just one PuTTY session. You may open as many as you like.) For example, you may create/edit files, create directories, execute UNIX commands, etc. Netscape, XV, Xeyes, Neko, and other applications that open another window will not work from here. However, you may edit your web page using vi editor in this window, and then use your usual web browser (such as Netscape on your ERA account) to view the changes.
