Research in the Department of Computer Science, UTK, is concentrated in the following areas:

Algorithms and Computability The study of algorithms, their efficiency in solving problems, and problems that are "solvable" by algorithms
Artificial Intelligence Artificial Intelligence research in the Department of Computer Science at The University of Tennessee is focused in the areas of neural information processing, genetic algorithms, and cooperative distributed robotics.
Image and Pattern Analysis The study of efficient recognition of patterns and sequences and the construction and enhancement of images.
Scientific Computing The study of tools, algorithms, and environments for solving mathematical models of problems in science and engineering on computers and networked resources. The Innovative Computing Laboratory, ICL, performs related research in the area of high-performance computing.
Software Engineering (SQRL) The study of the theory, analysis, and application of strategies to design, construct, and maintain software systems. The Software Quality Research Laboratory (SQRL) performs applied research and development in the area of software engineering.
Systems The study of tools and algorithms enabling efficient and productive management of computer resources and their interactions with users.
