Algorithms and Computability
The study of algorithms and
computability is at the foundation of computer science. A major goal
is to design effective algorithmic paradigms and establish bounds on
running times and space requirements. Another goal is to determine
the extent of problems solvable on various models of computation.
Research underway at the University of Tennessee includes work on a
variety of problem domains, including parallel computing, network
optimization, operations research and VLSI design. We seek to
develop algorithmic approaches that bring powerful and, in many
cases, emergent mathematical techniques to bear on critical
combinatorial problems.

Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence research in the
Department of Computer Science at The University of Tennessee is focused in
the areas of neural information processing, genetic algorithms, and
cooperative distributed robotics.
- Neural information processing is the study of artificial
intelligence, cognitive science, and emergent computation issues based
upon neural networks and models.
- Genetic algorithms encompasses the study of models of machine
learning which derive their behavior from a process of simulated
evolution.
- Cooperative distributed robotics is the study of multiple
embodied agents and their interaction in a dynamic and uncertain world.
