On behalf of the faculty, I
welcome you to the Department of Computer Science at the University of
Tennessee at Knoxville - the flagship research university of the State
of Tennessee. The department's mission is to produce scholars capable
of creative work in computer science. Our goals are to:
-
graduate students at the baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral levels
that are highly desired by top academic institutions, research labs, and
technical companies across the nation;

conduct research programs that have national recognition and significance;
and
-
guide our instructional and research programs so that the results
of our work will be a significant factor in the Tennessee economy of the
next generation.
The department is highly productive. It ranks among the top UT science
departments in the number of Bachelor's and Master's degrees awarded and
in sponsored research funding. When normalized by the size of the faculty,
it also ranks among the top UT science departments in the number of PhD
degrees awarded.
We have a small, top-quality faculty. Nearly 50% of our faculty have received
their doctorate from top-ten computer science departments, and one of
our faculty is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. They have
had excellent advisors and mentors and experience with strong academic
departments with high standards and want to build such an environment
at the University of Tennessee.
We hope this site conveys the exciting research and educational opportunities
available in our department. We encourage prospective undergraduate or graduate
students to visit us and experience our spirit for learning and enthusiasm for
computer science.
