We have received word that Gerard Salton passed away on Monday, August 28.
Gerard served on the ASIS Board and won the Award of Merit in 1989.
As his citation reads, "...every information retrieval system available
today has features that emanated from Salton's questioning, including
truncation (as a form of stemming), adjacency (as a form of phrase searching),
phrase searching, free text indexing, and modest forms of feedback."
Gerry was one of the founders of the Computer Science Department at Cornell
University and served as Editor in Chief of the Communications of the ACM.
More complete information on Gerry will be included in an upcoming\
