Virtual Network Emulation Tools

A Master's Pilot Project
Presented by
Florence M. Fowler

Virtual Network Emulation Tools (vnet) is a master's pilot project written at the request of Dr. David Straight, Associate Head of the Department of Computer Science, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN. Dr. Straight envisioned a layer of software emulating the link/physical layers of the Internet protocol stack so as to provide the students taking his class, Unix Network Programming, the environment to actually write their own implementations of the real Internet protocol stack. He wanted them to learn about the TCP/UDP/IP protocol stack by actually implementing the functionality it provides rather than just reading about it. The student's introduction to the software is this README.

The project was presented in the form of Power Point slides. To see these, download the Power Point presentation here .

I wish to give credit and everlasting gratitude to Dr. Tom Dunigan, Researcher at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and professor of computer science at UT. He helped me take a few, very broad specifications and come up with a design for the project which has now been used successfully for the class in the fall semester, 2000.
