2nd WWW Fischer Random Progressive Chess Championship

Doug Hyatt (USA) - João Pedro Neto (Portugal)

1. b4

The best move, opening the diagonal for the bishop and creating threats against the black kingside.

2. a5 axb4 ??

This series is equivalent to a "pass", as it completely neglects black's development. Much better is 2. b5 e5 or 2. b5 f5.

3. c3 cxb4 f4

Already white has enormous mating threats involving the long diagonal, a promoting f-pawn, and in some lines a double check from a bishop on the a2-g8 diagonal and a knight.

4. f5 Kf7 Nf6 e5

Black spends all four of his moves doing nothing but avoiding mate. Any attempt to take some of white's material just gets mated.

5. Qxc7 Qxc8 Qxb8 Qxd8 Qxf6+

The queen mows through the enemy ranks like a scythe through wheat. Black may have avoided mate, but it matters not, as white easily secures a winning material advantage.

6. gxf6 Rc8 Rc1 Rxd1 Rxe1 Rxf1+

This would be a significant swallowing of material, if not for the fact that black is already down an enormous amount of material.

7. Kxf1 Bxe5 Bxf6 Bxh8 Bd4 Nc3 a3

White knocks black out of the game, reducing him to a powerless bishop and unpromotable pawns.

8. Resigns
