What is the format of the championship?

WIPCC '98 is a correspondence chess championship for progressive chess. All games are being played via email.

The tournament is divided into three rounds, a preliminary round, a semifinal round, and a final round. In the preliminary round, 64 players are divided into 8 groups of 8. Each player plays one game against each player in his section. The top 2 from each section plus 5 wild cards advance to the semifinal round.

In the semifinal round, there are 3 groups of 7 players each. Each person plays one game against each player in his section. The top 2 from each section plus 1 wild card advance to the final round.

The 7 players in the final round will play 6 games, one against each other player. The highest scoring player will be the WIPCC 98 champion!

What are the prizes?

The Internet Chess Club has generously agreed to donate a year's membership as one of the prizes for the championship! There will be additional prizes. I will announce these as they become available.

Are computers allowed?

Use of a computer is allowed to record, edit, and view your moves. Use of databases is also permitted. Free software is available from A.I.S.E. Using a computer to find checkmates or to evaluate the positions is prohibited. Consulting with other humans is also prohibited. Of course, these rules cannot be enforced, but there they are, regardless.

What's the time control?

Time control for all games will be 100 days per side for the entire game. 30 days of vacation time per calendar year is allowed.
