Black Sabbath

Black Sabbath is, in my opinion, the band that created and defined heavy metal as we know it today.  Their first official album Black Sabbath, released in 1970, was as far as I know the first album of its kind.  There were, of course, several other great rock bands around when Sabbath began - The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin - but no one before Sabbath had ever played the kind of dark, heavy sounding music that we now know as heavy metal.
I first really got into Sabbath about a year or two year ago, I think.  I think I already had Ozzy's solo album Ozzmosis at the time, but I hadn't heard much actual Sabbath stuff (just Paranoid and Iron Man on the radio, and a cover of Planet Caravan on Pantera's Far Beyond Driven album).  For some reason I decided that I wanted to hear Paranoid.  I may have just heard it on the radio and really liked it, but I think I wanted to listen to it because I had just heard the cover that Type O Negative does of it on their Origin of the Feces album.  Anyway, whatever it was, I decided that I wanted to listen to see what Sabbath's Paranoid album sounded like.  I thought my dad had Paranoid on record, so I went through his record collection looking for it.  I didn't find it with majority of his collection, but instead I found it in a small discarded stack of records hidden away in cabinet under his stereo.  After listening to it I found out that it was there because it was scratched and worn pretty badly, no doubt from countless hours of being played.  Despite the crackles and pops from the wear and tear on the record, I loved the album and took it upon myself to replace it in my collection with a CD.  My dad soon remembered how much he like Sabbath and bought me their first album, which he has borrowed several times.
