Guidelines for bidding
- You need 26+ points to be in game in a major (4H, 4S) or notrump (3N)
- You need 29+ points to be in game in a minor (5C, 5D).
- You can add a point to your hand for each card after the 5th in a suit if
it's the trump suit. If it's a side suit, add a point for each card after the
4th.
- If you have a fit, add:
- 1 point for a doubleton (not in the trump suit)
- 2 points for a singleton
- 3 points for a void.
Here's an example:
Note that N/S each have 12 points, which means that their total of 24 shouldn't be enough
for game. However, north can add an extra point each for his 6th spade, his doubleton
diamond and his doubleton club. That makes a total of 27 points, so they should be
in game.
Here, N/S should make 10 tricks and make their game. Had west held the DA instead of
east, the contract would probably not make.
