This was at Vulcan Field (in Maryville), vs. Farragut. Maryville
scrimmaged against Powell earlier in the year, but this was their
first match since the frigid game at Brentwood.
- General milling before the game.
Jay talks with Ryan. Tony confers with Jeff. Sparky ties his shoes.
- The backs before the game -- Jeff, Alex, Adam, ??
- You see Adam, Alex and Jeff in action here, along with the rest of
the team, (most prominently Kelly),
trying to prevent Farragut from scoring (I believe they were
successful here).
- We're in the second half now. Maryville has a good lead -- 19-5 or
something like that. I'm guessing, from the looks of things, that
that player on the left has just kicked the ball.
- A line out. In case you are wondering, during a line-out, both sides
line up a few feet from each other, and the team with advantage throws
it down the middle. The advantage comes from the fact that the team
throwing it in can call a play so that their people can most likely
get the ball by hoisting a player up to get it at the right moment.
Of course, the other team tries to do the same thing to thwart that
plan. I'm not sure whose ball it is, and who is doing better here -- it's
just a good line out picture.
- General milling.
- Jeff has almost scored, I believe on a kick. Here, he's down and bummed.
Maryville gets a scrum on the 5-meter line.
- Teammates show support (Jesse, Jeff, Tony, Charlie, Curtis)
- The ensuing scrum.
- Success! 5 points for Maryville!
- A scrum. What happens is as follows. Men from both sides line up and lock arms.
The ref yells "Engage!" and they are supposed to jockey for position, but not
push each other. They usually push. At that point, the "Scrum half" for the
team with advantage (in this case, #9 for Maryville), rolls the ball into the
middle of the scrum. *Now*, they're allowed to push. The folks in the scrum
try to kick the ball backwards, and eventually, the scrum half for the
team that has successfully kicked it back will pick it
up and commence play.
- Some back play -- probably following a kick by Farragut -- Jeff passes
it to Sparky.
- More back play -- Jeff starts it upfield. If all goes correctly, as Jeff
is being tackled, he'll pass it to Alex.
- A "ruck" -- bodies everywhere.
- More aggressive Rugby play.
- Jeff carries the ball -- it would appear that he is going to be tackled.
- 13 minutes later -- Jeff went on a long run, avoided some tacklers
and scores!!!!
So ended the game -- something like 33-5. A good game for Maryville.
