The University of Tennessee College of Engineering's (COE) Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and the College of Arts and Sciences' Department of Computer Science (CS) were officially merged as the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) on July 1, 2007.

Until the new Min Kao Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Building is ready for occupancy in the 2009-1010 time period, Information Technology (IT) support will continue to be provided in Ferris Hall and Claxton Complex. The goal of the IT staff is to continue the same high level of technical support that existed in both departments prior to the merger, gradually integrate redundant IT services such as authentication and email, and plan for the efficient relocation of people and facilities from Ferris Hall, the Science and Computer Engineering Research Center (SERF), and Claxton Complex to the Min Kao Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Building.
