I'm a second year PhD student in Computer Science at the University of
Tennessee Knoxville. Computers and programming have long been a passion of
mine dating back to my first computer which was an i386 compatible computer
in 1987. I was exposed early on to Apple computers owned by the CS department
located on the lower floor of Ayers Hall. I wrote my first program at the age
of 11 in a simple language called BASIC. During high school I continued to
"tinker" with computers and took several introductory computer classes. I
learned several very simple languages (including a version of assembly language)
during this period and I would often times help others with their computers. I
managed several of the computer labs at my high school including a Macintosh lab
for the Biology students. I was mostly using Windows computers (Windows 3.11
and 95) during this period after having been disgusted by direction (or lack
thereof) the Apple operating system was taking. I finished high school at the
top of my class. I attended UT on several full scholarships starting in 1998
and began with a focus in Biology. I switched to Computer Science after I found
that Biology wasn't challenging enough. It was during this period that I also
became involved with GNU/Linux and it has become my operating system of choice
due to its superior design and implementation as well as the Open Source
Movement that is it apart. I am a big believer in the the GPL license and most
of the code that I offer on this site is distributed under it. I have worked for
several local companies including Celerity and Ascend as well as private
individuals. I am a member of the ACM and Upsilon Pi Epsilon (National Computer
Honor Society) as well as number other generic honor societies. I graduated
from the University of Tennessee in May 2003 as valedictorian (4.0 GPA) with a
BS in Computer Science and a minor in Mathematics. Since becoming a graduate
student I have continued to excel in Computer Science (maintaining a 4.0 GPA).
I should complete all of my master's requirements this coming school year and
begin work on my PhD research and dissertation. I'm currently planning on
focusing my studies on parallel and grid computing although many of my early
classes have focused on network programming and their related protocols. My
ultimate goal is become a professor at a major university and in addition to
doing research begin teaching Computer Science to the coming generations of
college students.
