Computer Timekeeping/Network Time Protocol

There is a lot of confusion in the world about protocols for transmitting the time of day across the Internet. The industrial-strength member of the field is the true Network Time Protocol (NTP), originated by Dr. David Mills and his team at the University of Delaware, and now maintained by an open-source collaboration. To achieve its high precision, NTP uses UDP (the User Datagram Protocol). NTP does not use TCP at all: any time software you may see using TCP is not speaking NTP. (A client-only variant of NTP is SNTP, the Simple Network Time Protocol.)
