Web Indices and Search Engines

There is apparently no further need for me to explain that Google.com is a Web search engine. There is now the Official Google Blog.) As of 2009-08-15, there is a test version of Google's revised Caffeine search system.

However, probably not everybody yet understands that Wikipedia is the Roulette Wheel of Knowledge! Some journalists are learning (the hard way) about the "Wikiback Effect".

John Hiler of Microcontent News wrote about the comparative ethics of blogging (web-logging) vs. "real" journalism, but his references to the ethics of the New York Times seem rather ironic in the light of the Jason Blair affair. Randall Hoven collected a list of examples of media dishonesty.

Hugh Hewitt points out the potential for mischief by bloggers who are not who they claim to be.

In 2004, William Rivers Pitt of the TruthOut website described how seventeen journalists met with Senator John Kerry to help him formulate his strategy for the Democratic primary elections. Publications represented include Time magazine, Newsweek, The New Yorker, CNN, MSNBC, Slate, and, of course, The New York Times. (Oddly, the same article appeared for a while on the official "John Kerry for President" website, but disappeared mysteriously during August 2004.)

See that CBS News is faking news reporters' backdrops. Or keep tabs on excesses of cable-TV news shows.

This article in Editor and Publisher magazine quotes James O'Shea, managing editor of the Chicago Tribune, uttering this revealing opinion, "There are too many places for people to get information."

Well-known science-fiction author Orson Scot Card has been looking for some honest newspaper reporters.

In 2008, Katie Granju of Knoxville never got satisfaction when asking a Washington Post reporter about his sources on a story accusing Alaska Governor Sarah Palin of wrongdoing. Then a public-relations professional produced some supposedly "grassroots" anti-Palin videos.

It is the largest on-line service in the world. It has millions of members. It has unlimited features. And it's all free. What's the hitch? That's what Randall McLagan wants to know, especially when his best friend, a popular columnist for PC Monthly magazine, falls to his death from the Golden Gate Bridge. Determined to find out why, McLagan follows a trail of computer crime, stock market intrigue, and violent murder--a trail that eventually brings him face to face with the sinister force behind... The Code.
