Tamil Nadu has a rich tradition of folk music. Tamil folk music tends to be vivacious and is best experienced at a live performance. Recent efforts have revived interest in folk music and good recordings are starting to be available. Although it is most often associated with the rural milieu, folk music remains a major source of inspiration for the more popular film music. Vijayalakshmi Navaneethakrishnan and Pushpavanam Kuppuswamy are two of the principal contemporary "folk-musicologists" who are reviving popular interest in this traditional music form.

Tamil Devotional Song Samples for your listening pleasure |
Carnatic music, referred to as "classical music" in South India, is a very old tradition. One of its greatest composers was Thyagaraja, who is regarded by many as a saint. Besides him, Muthuswami Deekshithar and Shyama Sastri are the other two composers who constitute the three pillars of Carnatic music. Most of these songs are Hindu devotional in nature, but are enjoyed by almost anybody with taste.
