My current research involves 3D iterative reconstruction of circular orbit cone-beam micro-CT data (X-ray computed tomography data, typically for small animal medical imaging). The iterative reconstruction algorithms generally take the form of solving very large sparse linear systems (for example, in a weighted least squares sense). For current data, the matrix in the linear system has over 100 billion non-zero elements and the resulting 3D image has dimensions 512x512x1022.
