Summer Internship Program at UTK and ORNL |
The Joint Institute for Computational Science at UTK and Oak Ridge National Laboratory are sponsoring a numberof students, primarily undergraduate students, from Historically Black Colleges and Universities to participate in a 10-week summer internship program at UTK and ORNL. The program is part of the activities of the MetaCenter Regional Alliance at UTK to promote and facilitate computational science interest at HBCU through a collaborative computing environment. Students of the internship program will work on research projects with their match-up advisors at ORNL and UTK on specific computational science research projects.
The internship program will last for 10 weeks from the last week of May to the first week of Auguest. A compatible salary will be provided to the students. Students will be arranged to stay at the UT dormatory. Undergraduate students are the primary candidate of the program, but first year graduate students will be allowed to particapate depending on the nature of the research projects and availability of support. Participation in the program is restricted to US citizens and permanent residents form the HBCU partners of the UTK/MRA program.
Background Information
The MetaCenter Regional Alliance at the University of Tennessee was established in 1996 under the direction and support of National Science Foundation. The mission of the alliance is to establish collaborations between computational scientists at Historically Black Colleges and Universities and other interdisciplinary researchers affiliated with the National Supercomputer Centers and the UTK MRA. Seven HBCUs are currently partners of the UTK MRA: Alabama A & M University, Fayetteville State University, Fisk University, Meharry Medical College, Spelman College, Southern University, and Tennessee State University. The UTK MRA also works with HBCU faculty to develop and integrate high-performance computing applications into graduate- and undergraduate-level courses and to assist HBCU teaching faculty in gaining access to high-performance computing resources of the MetaCenter and the UTK MRA
Facilities
Computers accessible to JICS and ORNL associates include: a 5Gflops 70-processor Intel Paragon (ORNL), a 20 Gflops 48-processor IBM SP2 (UTK), a 1.5 Gflops MasPar MP2, and networks of workstations and PCs.
Selection
An applicant must be a citizen or a Permanent Resident of the United States from the Partner HBCU of the MRA program. Aminimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a scale of 4.0 is required. The selection of a participant is based on academic achievement, recommendations, compatibility of background and interests with the research programs available at UTK and ORNL. A participant is required to have coverage under a health insurance plan before arriving at the appointment site.
